TIPS Personnel is hiring a skilled and safety-minded Top Man/Woman to join our underground utilities crew in Edmonton. As the key connection between the crew in the trench and the foreman, you’ll help guide safe, accurate, and efficient sewer, storm, and water line installations. This is a vital, hands-on role requiring strong leadership, technical ability, and attention to detail.

Job Responsibilities:

• Act as the main point of communication between the foreman, pipelayers, and labourers
• Prepare and load tools, and assist crew with daily setup and site safety prep
• Hook up, guide, and direct tools and pipe being lowered into the trench
• Watch trench walls, slopes, and access points to ensure crew safety
• Measure and confirm height and grade using batter boards and lasers
• Understand rigging, lifting, and hoisting requirements, including safe load centering
• Monitor for site hazards, oversee ditch protection setup (fencing/barricades), and maintain a clean and compliant work area
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and grade sheets accurately
• Assist in acquiring HI and shooting eye level when needed
• Provide mentorship and direction to junior crew members
• Maintain awareness of equipment paths, right of ways, and underground utility locates
• Report incidents or issues to the foreman and ensure site safety protocols are followed

Qualifications:

• Previous experience in underground utility and earthworks construction is required
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grade sheets, and layout drawings
• Knowledge of trench safety, rigging procedures, and excavation protocols
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• High attention to detail and safety awareness
• Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions
• Must have your own transportation (site not transit accessible)
• Steel-toe boots and PPE required
• Availability for full-time, seasonal work including some weekends

• underground utilities : 2 years (preferred)
